L-isomer or DL-lactic acid?

Hello,

In an application with RMN and DMSO, it is advisable to use the L-isomer, but I would use the DL-lactic acid, because it has the same chemical shifts and is cheaper, is it important?

Hello Sarah,

It's recommended to use the L-isomer because it is much purer than the mixed isomer. The best quality of DL-lactic acid from Sigma is 90% while the pure L-isomer is 99%. Another reason is that DL-lactic acid contains inorganic salts that might cause a low reading of NMR signal.
