Ultrafiltration (UF) involves applying a pressure (positive or negative) to drive a solution through a semi-permeable membrane to clarify, concentrate or fractionate the molecular species in the range of 1 – 1 000 kD.

Macrofiltration is the separation of suspended materials that are visible to the naked eye, by means of a size selective barrier with an opening ≥ 5 µm.
