"Mixed mode" sorbent?
The dual functionality (ion exchange and hydrophobic groups) confers greater selectivity. The compounds of interest, that absolutely must possess an acidic or basic group, are trapped by the ion exchange bonding. An initial strong wash involving pH eliminates any ionisable impurities. It is then possible to eliminate the other impurities trapped by hydrophobic interactions using an organic solvent.
